Sage Francis is an “indie” rapper and laws only hip-hop signed Epitaph Records. He is by far my favorite rapper and is probably the best artist I’ve encountered recently.
One thing I like about Sage Francis is the use of a live band rather than a song entirely computerized support. This gives more emotion to the music, and “going back to rehab” in particular doesn’t sound the same or have the same emotional impact without it.
The guitar was picked up at the start, along with the sound of Sage’s set a mood that the flow of his words and the development of the instrumental builds throughout the song, making travel epic, emotional.
The song begins with a voice reading out the alphabetical list of drug names. The sound then began to fade with the reverb effect increased. After the votes have been submerged, Sage started rapping.
The lyrics were nothing short of art. Most people forget that RAP stood for rhythm and poetry, but I believe that Sage Francis is exactly what we all need to remind us of this. I even went so far as to say that he is our generation Bob Dylan. And that’s a bold claim!
